Hi folks

Newbie and imposter (Alhambra) alert all in one :P

Have a '99 Hammer 110 TDI, with cruise fitted, but totally non-functional. Can't hear any clicks or any changes when activated at any speed.

I do have a licensed version of VAG-COM (v.409.1) but can't find any mention of cruise under any of the sections. Is there an idiot's guide to how to check for cruise control errors using this software?

Will be rooting around for help as there's plenty of jobs to do, including the dreaded dead wipers experience...

Cheers

If you use vagcom and go into the measurement block ( I think under engine ) there is a section where one of them is for cruise control.

It has binary bits ( 1's and 0's ) that relate to the various switches and pedals.

You can use this to check they all work.

ie if you press the brake pedal a certain digit changes from 0 to 1 ( or vice versa ).

The same for the set/reset on/off switches and clutch pedal.

Easy way to eliminate any electric faults.

An update.

Go into Engine .....Meas. Blocks

Go up to group 06

You have 4 sets of data.

1st set is your speed...

2nd set is the brake/clutch pedal switches

1st Digit is the clutch

2nd and 3rd are the brake switches....don't know which one is which....will find out sometime.

3rd set is binary digits representing the output state of the switches.

1st Digit = 1 when clutch pressed.

2nd Digit = 1 when brake pressed.

3rd Digit =1 when Reset switch is pressed.

4th Digit = 1 when Accelerate/Set switch is pressed.

5th Digit = 1 when cruise is on and = 0 when cruise is off or when off button is gently pushed to deactivate but not turn off the cruise control.

6th Digit =1 when cruise control switch is set to on.

Any of these behaving incorrectly would indicate a faulty switch or wiring...

4th set is cruise control state not sure of the logic behind the numbers on this.

0.0 definitely means it is off but 1.0 doesn't necessarily mean that its on ?

All the above refers to my MK1 Tdi but is likely to be pretty much identical in the Mk2's.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the welcomes peeps :)

Been enjoying rummaging through all the posts relevant to my issues.

It's Sunday and the sun is shining so it's time to give the car some tlc - will report back...

Thanks big_kev, that's given me something to work on - here are my observations....

Changing the cruise controls certainly alters the readouts, and depressing the brake also changes the readouts along the lines above.

I get the 1.0 readout for whether cruise is on.

The interesting observation is that the clutch pedal is showing as depressed all the time, when it clearly was not. By pushing the pedal up towards me taking into account the free play in the mechanism, I got it to show it was not depressed. Could this be the cause of my problem? Presumably there's a switch or sensor getting wrong readings, so I'll do another forum search and see what other folk have said.

There is indeed a switch on the clutch pedal and I suspect that this is the cause of your problem.

Solution: Replace the switch.

Quick update. Got the cruise control to work if I pushed the clutch pedal up, to take up the free play, which is only about 3mm. Have sourced a rubber pad to stick on the clutch mechanism and now cruise works!

Thanks for the help.

The "piston" on the clutch (and brake) switch is self adjusting.

Hold the clutch ( or brake) pedal down and pull the switch piston out to it full length ( can be a bit stiff).

When you let go the pedal the piston will be pushed back in to its correct position.

Its on a ratchet type movement.

Sometimes if something gets wedged ( I'm thinking big feet here ! ) between the pedal and the switch piston it can be pushed too far back in and this causes the original problem.
